Jackie Jacobo

I am ecstatic to continue my work with DFEO alongside its affiliated partners with DUSD. I am a product of the Downey Unified School District and a part of the statistic of disadvantaged youth growing up. Giving back to the same community I grew up in fulfills my goal in being the guiding representation to these youth with similar stories. My background in the education field has long been a passion of mine. Fostering creativity, individuality, and unpredictability in our ever-evolving environments, are what guide our youth to their perception of the world around them and how they will continue growing into it. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from San Francisco State University and have worked with a non-profit in Oakland mentoring disadvantaged youth to promote their understanding of the law. I've also worked with children on the spectrum as a Behavioral Therapist to advocate awareness and gain appropriate support to the children and their families. In addition, I've had the pleasure to be a part of an in-home daycare with my family and have seen kids grow up right before my eyes. I hope to continue adding to my proud work in the education field.

Estoy encantado de continuar mi trabajo con DFEO junto con sus socios afiliados al DUSD. Soy un producto del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Downey y parte de la estadística de jóvenes desfavorecidos que crecen. Retribuir a la misma comunidad en la que crecí cumple mi objetivo de ser la representación guía de estos jóvenes con historias similares. Mi experiencia en el campo de la educación ha sido durante mucho tiempo una de mis pasiones. Fomentar la creatividad, la individualidad y la imprevisibilidad en nuestros entornos en constante evolución son lo que guía a nuestros jóvenes hacia su percepción del mundo que los rodea y cómo seguirán creciendo en él. Obtuve mi licenciatura en Justicia Penal de la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco y trabajé con una organización sin fines de lucro en Oakland asesorando a jóvenes desfavorecidos para promover su comprensión de la ley. También he trabajado con niños en el espectro como terapeuta conductual para promover la concientización y obtener el apoyo adecuado para los niños y sus familias. Además, tuve el placer de ser parte de una guardería en casa con mi familia y he visto a los niños crecer ante mis ojos. Espero seguir contribuyendo a mi orgulloso trabajo en el campo de la educación.

What is your favorite subject in school and why?

History/Government was always my favorite subject in school. I'm curious by nature and often find myself asking ‘Why?’. What the subject has taught me was that failing to learn ALL of our country's history is the easiest path to repeating its mistakes. Understanding how our society functions today, is understanding how it functioned then.

¿Cuál es tu materia favorita en la escuela y por qué?

Historia/Gobierno siempre fue mi materia favorita en la escuela. Soy curioso por naturaleza y a menudo me pregunto: "¿Por qué?" Lo que me ha enseñado la asignatura es que no aprender TODA la historia de nuestro país es la forma más fácil de repetir los errores. Briana Urias

Hello, my name is Briana Urias and I am the Site Coordinator at Imperial Elementary School. I grew up in Downey and attended Downey schools. I graduated from California State University of Los Angeles with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and plan on going back to school for a Master's degree in Education. I have been working with DFEO for two years now, starting as group leader and having just been promoted to Site Coordinator.

Hola, mi nombre es Briana Urias y soy la coordinadora del sitio en la Escuela Primaria Imperial. Crecí en Downey y asistí a las escuelas de Downey. Me gradué de la Universidad Estatal de California en Los Ángeles con una licenciatura en Psicología y planeo volver a la escuela para obtener una maestría en Educación. Llevo dos años trabajando con DFEO, empezando como líder de grupo y acabando de ser ascendido a Coordinador de Sitio.

What inspired you to work in the education field?

I knew from a pretty young age I wanted to work with kids. Being the oldest sibling of three, I would sometimes play "school" with my younger brother and sister. This was our homework time essentially where I was their "teacher" and I would help them with their homework, while I would work on my own. It was not until I graduated from Warren High School that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the education field as either a teacher or school counselor.

¿Qué te inspiró a trabajar en el campo de la educación?

Desde muy pequeña supe que quería trabajar con niños. Siendo el mayor de tres hermanos, a veces jugaba a la “escuela” con mi hermano y mi hermana menores. Este era esencialmente nuestro tiempo de tarea, donde yo era su "maestro" y los ayudaba con su tarea, mientras yo trabajaba por mi cuenta. No fue hasta que me gradué de Warren High School que supe que quería seguir una carrera en educación como maestra o consejera escolar.

Carlos Beltran

My name is Carlos, a college student majoring in Law and Public policy. I have about 5 years of experience working with students in numerous roles and capacities. What inspired me to work in the education field and continues to do so is the community building that comes along with the job. Seeing students accomplish their goals and grow is really empowering.

Mi nombre es Carlos, estudiante universitario con especialización en Derecho y Políticas Públicas. Tengo aproximadamente 5 años de experiencia trabajando con estudiantes en numerosos roles y capacidades. Lo que me inspiró a trabajar en el campo de la educación y continúa haciéndolo es la construcción de comunidad que conlleva el trabajo. Ver a los estudiantes lograr sus objetivos y crecer es realmente enriquecedor.

If you could swap roles with a student for the day, what grade would you choose and what do you think you would learn from it?

3rd grade! I would try and enjoy some of the things we take for granted now as adults - like endless amounts of energy.

Gerald Byrd

My name is Gerald Byrd and I'm from Chicago, IL. I am a poet, author, and life enthusiast! I have worked in education and child care for the past 10 years serving in a multitude of roles! I am both passionate and dedicated to empowering the youth through effective communication and authentic relationship building. I believe it is my purpose to help inspire and mold the next generation. I believe in both structure and open mindedness. My goal as site coordinator this year is to build a genuine connection with every student in our program as well as create a culture that's built on respect, discipline, consistency, and creative expression. I want every student to feel safe, understood and above all respected! I am looking forward to creating and implementing new games, activities, and systems aimed at the realization of those goals.

Mi nombre es Gerald Byrd y soy de Chicago, IL. ¡Soy poeta, autor y entusiasta de la vida! ¡He trabajado en educación y cuidado infantil durante los últimos 10 años desempeñando multitud de funciones! Me apasiona y me dedico a empoderar a los jóvenes a través de una comunicación efectiva y la construcción de relaciones auténticas. Creo que mi propósito es ayudar a inspirar y moldear a la próxima generación. Creo tanto en la estructura como en la mentalidad abierta. Mi objetivo como coordinador del sitio este año es construir una conexión genuina con cada estudiante de nuestro programa, así como crear una cultura basada en el respeto, la disciplina, la coherencia y la expresión creativa. ¡Quiero que cada estudiante se sienta seguro, comprendido y sobre todo respetado! Espero crear e implementar nuevos juegos, actividades y sistemas destinados a la realización de esos objetivos.

Can you share a funny or memorable quote from a student that always brings a smile to your face?

One funny moment that I will always remember is when a student once asked me if I had ‘rizz’? And I didn’t know what the word meant, so I spent my entire lunch break researching the phrase. It made me smile because I never thought Id reach a point where I wasn’t up to date with current terminology.

Un momento divertido que siempre recordaré es cuando un estudiante me preguntó una vez si tenía 'rizz'. Y no sabía lo que significaba la palabra, así que pasé toda la hora del almuerzo investigando la frase. Me hizo sonreír porque nunca pensé que llegaría a un punto en el que no estaría al día con la terminología actual.
