ABOUT US
The Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities (DFEO) is a 501c3 non-profit, providing before and after-school enrichment programs for Downey Unified School District's TK-8th grade students. DFEO's Access Program provides an academically enriching, health-conscious, and safe environment, dedicated to developing youth voice and leadership, active and engaged learning opportunities, and enhancing social-emotional growth of program participants.

BOARD MEMBER ROLES & RESPONSIBILITES
Mission and Vision: Board members should understand and actively support the organization's mission, vision, and goals.
Governance: Board members are responsible for ensuring that the organization operates in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. They may be involved in setting policies, approving budgets, and overseeing the organization's financial health.
Strategic Planning: Board members should participate in strategic planning processes and contribute their expertise to help the organization develop long-term goals and strategies.
Financial Oversight: Board members have a fiduciary duty to oversee the organization's finances. They should review financial statements, ensure appropriate financial controls are in place, and monitor the organization's financial performance.
Board Meetings: Board members are expected to attend and actively participate in monthly board meetings (10 meetings per year; dark in July & December). They should review meeting materials, ask questions, and contribute to discussions and decision-making processes.
Community Outreach and Advocacy: Board members may be called upon to represent the organization in the community, advocate for its cause, and build relationships with stakeholders and potential partners.
Ethical and Legal Responsibilities: Board members should act in the best interest of the organization, maintain confidentiality when necessary, and adhere to high ethical standards in their decision-making and interactions.
Fundraising: Board members are expected to contribute to fundraising efforts by identifying potential donors, assisting with campaigns, or making personal donations. Board members are required to raise, acquire, or donate a minimum of $10,000 annually to support the organization's initiatives and demonstrate commitment for financial sustainability.
Terms and Participation: DFEO’s Board Members serve a three-year term.
